Katz & Maus (German)
Alternative title: Cat & Mouse
Platform: Commodore 64
Gametype: Undefined

This game was often mistakenly referred to as 'Tom and Jerry'. The characters on the title screen somewhat resemble the famous duo (in an ugly way).

Apparently the game came for free with a box of ten 5 1/4" disks

For some reason, I think it's safe to say that piratism is largely responsible for making this little underrated piece of software at all known. Even though Katz & Maus is clearly based on an infinitely old stereotypical setting in the animal kingdom, it tries to catch a wave of popularity with the title screen, having the two characters almost recognizable as cartoon favourites Tom & Jerry.

Although the title screen shows the chosen player character cutting (what looks like) a cake with (apparently the wrong end of) a knife, the game places "Jerry" collecting roundly-shaped pieces of (what look more like) cheese in a familiar arcade-style platforming/ladder-climbing setting. Your two enemies are, rather unsurprisingly, the cat, who acts in a rather homing missilish kind of way; and gravity - albeit a fall kills you only after a certain height.

Having played this game to a quick death "back when", I can recommend Katz & Maus only to a beginner, due to a very composed (if not non-existant) lift in difficulty during its nine levels that loop (one of which is repeated), which only emphasizes the sad lack of longevity here. You'd better grab a copy with a high score saver and the resetting score bug fixed, though, if you want to have at all interest to this game in the future. In the end, it's not that much to write about, even by 1985 standards. Kind of cute, though.
